Advantages of NTFS partition February 18, 2008

The NTFS file system, introduced with first version of Windows NT, is a completely different file system from FAT. It provides increased security, file–by–file compression, quotas, and even encryption. It is the default file system for new installations of Windows XP, and if you’re doing an upgrade from a previous version of Windows, you’ll be asked if you want to convert your existing file systems to NTFS. Its a default requirement for Windows Vista. You can convert FAT16 or FAT32 volumes to NTFS at any point. Just remember that you can’t easily go back to FAT or FAT32 (without reformatting the drive or partition), and i bet you wont think of it. For this reason, many system administrators, myself included, used to recommend that users format at least a small partition at the beginning of their main hard disk as FAT. But with the enhanced recovery abilities built into Windows XP (more on that in a future column), I don’t think it’s necessary or desirable to create that initial FAT partition.

When to Use FAT or FAT32?

If you’re running more than one operating system on a single computer (Dual OS), you will definitely need to format some of your volumes as FAT. Any programs or data that need to be accessed by more than one operating system on that computer should be stored on a FAT16 or possibly FAT32 volume. But keep in mind that you have no security for data on a FAT16 or FAT32 volume and any one with access to the computer can read, change, or even delete any file that is stored on a FAT16 or FAT32 partition. So do not store personal files on partitions formatted with FAT file systems.

P.S:

Its recommended to use NTFS rather than FAT when you have an individual system.

Shortest route in Life… July 20, 2007

I have always wondered about the people who get a MBBS degree after 5 to 6 years of hardship and then crack the CAT to get into IIMs. By the time they passout from IIM it would be around 7 to 8 years in the career benchmark to start earning a buck. The best match is to be a IIMA grad with an IIT background. But most of the things in life doesnt happen in the best way. One of the best routes is by getting educated in DPS, Delhi or KV or anyother reputed CBSE school and starting his/her IIT plans right from 9th grade or else after finishing 12thgrade, joining B.com in any reputed universitites in the country and then getting into IIMA. This option requires only 5 years of his/her life and after that he/she might see a lot of bux in the Management world. The cgpa doesn’t matter how low they are until you crack CAT and GD. Only in the PI you need to answer valid reasons to your poor scores in UG. You may be a average student in your Acads, but you must have exceptional reading and speaking capabilities to survive the WIMWIian life. After that once you are inside the IIMs they are considering only the cgpa for the summer placements and it would be relatively easier to get a good score in B.com than an IITian. The most important thing is that you have completed your Bachelors Degree in a year less than that of an IITian. The main drawback of a non-IITian is that you may not be good at analytical approach but an IITian has this brilliant quality which is mostly required to survive in IIMA. Another good news is that, as about 90 to 95 percent of the IIMs juntas are from engineering background, he/she could stand unique among the crowd.

Hacking Toolz January 15, 2007

I attended a workshop in Kurukshetra, the Techfest of Anna University in January. I write this blog to share some of the hacking tools i have known during that 3 hours of workshop. Hope everybody might have known the fundamentals and i dont think i need to start it from scratch. Hackers is of two types: Internal and External

Internal hackers pose the greatest threat to the IT systems of the world’s largest financial institutions, according to the 2005 Global Security Survey.

1. GetAdmin – This is a hacker utility which exploits flaws in MS Windows NT 4 OS and changes the administrative privilege of an account ie.any guest account can be changed to an administrator of the network.
Note: It doesn’t work in later version of windows
2. PipeUpAdmin – It is same as GetAdmin. But it works in MS Windows 2000. It has more enhanced features than GetAdmin.

Privelege Escalation is the process of exploiting a bug in an application to gain access to protected resources in the network. Cross Zone Scripting is a type of attack in which a website subverts the security model of web browsers so that it can run privilege escalationmalicious code on client computers. Vulnerability can be reduced by installing server packs and patches.

Password sniffing is an act of finding the password to gain access to the main system.
LC4 or L0phtCrack – This the most frequently used software for password sniffing. The good intention of this is that if the system admin has forgot the password then he can find the password within a minute. The bad intention is that it is used by hackers who can get all the passwords of a company within a minute. It usually uses the dictionary attack.

Session hijacking is the act of taking control of a user session after successfully obtaining or generating an authentication session ID. T sight Realtime – Once this software is connected to another system, the whole system is hijacked. A new window is opened in the hacker window and whatever the victim types over there Tsight display it in the hacker screen.

Port scanning software imply sends out a request to connect to the target computer on each port sequentially and makes a note of which ports responded or seem open to more in-depth probing.nmap is the mostly used software for port scanning.

Atlast i would conclude by listing some of the trojans and hacking tools with their use:

1. smbdie – This can kill the computer
2. netbus – trojan which can access the victim computer
3. elitewrap – this binds two exes which is used to combine a data file with a virus.

Note:

Some of the accurate definitions of the hacking tools are taken from Wikipedia

I write this blog by keeping in mind about the notpad tricks i have known. These Tricks were tested only on XP and dont know whether it works on Vista..

1. This Trick helps you to make a virus with your notepad:

Copy this code in ur notepad and save it and scan with your antivirus..
“X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}” (Without Quotes)

2. This Trick might be known to most of the people as Bush Trick:
Open a note pad and type Bush hid the facts. Save that file, close it and again open…

3. This trick has been added only after the world trade centre crash:
Did you know that the flight number of the plane that had hit WTC on 9/11 was Q33N. Open your Notepad in ur computer and type the flight number i.e Q33N Increase the Font Size to 72, Change the Font to Wingdings. U will be amazed by the findings.

4. This Trick makes your notepad with date and time entry:
Sometimes we want to insert current data and time, whenever we open the file in the notepad. If you are a lazy person like me, who don’t like to press F5 whenever you open a notepad. Then here is a trick to avoid this. Just add a .LOG in the first line of your text file and close it.Whenever you open the file with that text in the first line in the notepad, it will insert the current date and time at the end of the file. You can start entering your text after that.

5. This Trick helps in Changing Header and Footer of the notepad:
Ever printed the little text you wrote in Notepad? More often than not, the printout starts with “Untitled” or the filename at top, and “Page 1? on bottom. Want to get rid of it, or change it? Click on File, Page Setup. Get rid of the characters in Header and Footer boxes, and write what you want as Header and Footer. Use the following codes.

&l Left-align the characters that follow
&c Center the characters that follow
&r Right-align the characters that follow
&d Print the current date
&t Print the current time
&f Print the name of the document
&p Print the page number

Print tree root

a. Open NOTEPAD and enter {print tree root}
b. After that hit enter and type C:\windows\system
c. After that hit enter and type {print C:\windows\system\winlog
d. Hit enter and type 4*43?$@[455]3hr4~
e. Then save the file as teekids in C:\windows\system.

After India got Independance in 1947, IITs are formed and it is considered one of the prestigious institutions of the country till now. Only about 15000 juntas are selected from 3 lakh aspirants through their competitive test IIT-JEE which consists of 2 hours test of 3 papers each. In 2003, all RECs are united together under a common examination AIEEE which is 3 hour exam and it is open to all people. Until the unification of RECs the admission to REC are done according to the procedure of the their respective state in which it is located. In the recent survey of Top ten Engineering Colleges in India Today, Anna University finds a definite place in the top ten most of the times. Yet the admission to the college is based on 12th grade marks.

Tamil Nadu State Board 12th grade syllabus is actually a precise version of CBSE. It can never be compared with the CBSE 12th grade syllabus. Thus scoring marks is easier and most of them cram things and rewrite the exact answer as it is in the text book. SRV, a boarding school at Rasipuram near Salem are the experts in making the students to cram things exactly as it is in the Text book. The 12th grade marks should be kept only as Acads like our 10th grade marks and it should not be qualification for the admission to the college. A general category student who may have a high IQ but if he makes a small error in his 12th grade maths paper and it makes a lot of differences in his career. Admission to the colleges should be made only through competetive exams which consists of multiple choice questions. Another reason is that only a few percent of the seats are allocated for other state students and these restrictions should be broken and it should be open for the whole country.

Another point is that when my brother was studying his first year he has the option to study any foreign language like French, German, Japanese etc. But it lacks in my college days as they have made it english as the compulsary for all. This sucks!!!

Expecting this change to happen sooner in the coming years…
